Rotary  Eastern Adventure 

Itinerary

 Day 1 – March 10 – Columbus OH  Students Gather and Get Ready for the Trip in Our Meeting Hotel: Today students will arrive to meet the tour. Our hotel, the Best Western PortColumbus Airport is located near Columbus Airport and many of you will be dropped off there. Those arriving by air will be met and shuttled to the hotel by Chaperones and Rotary Volunteers. This evening we'll have a meeting and a chance to get to know one another before we start our adventure. Do not arrive at the hotel before 1 pm. (D)

Day 2 – March 11 - Washington DC, Arriving in Washington in Early Afternoon, Tour The Monuments On Washington's Impressive Mall (No Not A Shopping Mall): An early morning departure and a beautiful drive to Washington DC, getting us there in time to walk the Monuments of the famous Washington Mall (The Mall is a large park surrounded by the official buildings of our Capitol, not a shopping place). You will see the Lincoln, World War 2, Vietnam and Korea Memorials. Our hotel is in College Park, Maryland on the Campus of the University of Maryland. (CB)

Day 3 - March 12 - Washington DC, George Washington's Home, The Huge Smithsonian Institution, Great Museums: This morning we'll go to see the George Washington’s home at Mt. Vernon. This iconic home contains our 1st  president’s Grave.  It’s a beautiful setting  and a chance to see how people lived in the late 1700’s in the USA.. This afternoon explore the museum complex called the Smithsonian. The largest museum in the world it features all types of art, natural science, history and much more. Some may want to join chaperones while they walk Arlington National Cemetery. This evening we'll visit the impressive Iwo Jima monument, dedicated to the US Marine Corps; it has deep meaning and features a magnificent view of Washington. (CB)

Day 4 – March 13 - Washington DC, Pictures At The White House, Capitol Building, Exploring Washington With Your Friends: This morning we'll tour Washington including picture stops at the White House. After the White House we tour the Capitol Building and see how Congress is run. One of the oldest government buildings in the country, it took it's present form during the civil war.    This afternoon you'll be free to explore the Smithsonian Museums. There are many museums in this  complex, including three of the world's great art museums,the Holocaust  Museum, Museum of American history, American Museum of Natural History, the Museum of the American Indian, Ford's Theater (where Lincoln was assassinated) and many more interesting sites. Day 5 – March 14 - New York City, The Statue of Liberty And The Museum of American Immigration. Free Time In Exciting Times Square: Today we visit the Statue of Liberty, The Statue was a gift from the people of France. We'll also have time at the Museum of Immigration at Ellis Island.   It has welcomed millions of immigrants to the USA.  Time permitting we'll do a quick tour Uptown Manhattan with some free time after in Times Square in New York City. Day 6 – March 15 - New York City, Tour New York and And Explore The City, An Unforgettable Day:  A morning sightseeing tour will give you a great overview of Manhattan in New York City. We’ll visit Morningside Heights (Columbia University), Harlem, Central Park, Times Square, Fifth Avenue, Greenwich Village, China Town, SOHO, NOHO, Wall Street Area, Downtown and Uptown. New York is one of the world's most exciting cities. It's also the cultural center of the World, with world-class museums, theater and sights. This afternoon you'll have a chance to see it on your own with several hours of free time. Times Square and the incredible shopping of Fifth Avenue are marvelous places to explore and see the Greatest City in the World.

Day 7 – March 16 - Boston, Free Time In Boston Too: Today we'll surprise you with two activities. Explore the New England  countryside and see one of the best hands-on attractions in the region. We will keep this a big surprise which will wow you when you see it.  We'll get to Boston to explore Historic Boston, time permitting. (L)

Day 8 - March 17 - Plymouth Pilgrims, Harvard, The Freedom Trail and Boston. : We start this morning with a trip to Harvard University where you can explore "Harvard Yard". We'll drive by MIT (The Massachusetts's Institute of Technology) and Cambridge. Boston is the home of the Kennedy family and the Adams Rotary Eastern Trip Boston Family (the Presidents not the cartoon) and is one of  the oldest and most beloved cities in the North East. We'll stop at Boston Common where youwalk the 5 kilometer Freedom Trail which takes you all over the City visiting historic and cultural landmarks like the Old North Church, Quincy Market and Fannieul Hall, Boston Common, the State House, Paul Revere's House and the USS Constitution. Boston is the most European City in the USA, with old streets, coffee shops, and delightful restaurants. Much of the afternoon will be free time to explore this beautiful city.(B)

 Day 9 - March 18 -  Gettysburg But We Stop For Chocolate and Fun (Including Singing Cows): Today we'll drive all day to Gettysburg, PA, the site of the famous American Civil  War battle. We'll be driving through the Lehigh Valley. Time permitting we are going to stop at Hersey's Chocolate World Store where you can load up on delicious chocolates. Arriving this evening we'll later exchange pins and say good-bye (CB, D)

Day 10 - March 19 - Columbus Ohio, Gettysburg, Beautiful, Inspirational, Sad and Fun, Site of The Battle Which Made Modern America:: This morning we'll tour the battlefield where between 46,000 and 51,000 Americans killed wounded and missing.  A beautiful and fascinating place, Gettysburg is one of America's most significant historical sites. Weather permitting we'll walk a great part of the battlefield with an expert guide. Over 2000 monuments and signs explain the battle in detail. Many cannon and other mementos of the battle are located throughout the battlefield. Tonight we'll arrive in Columbus, where most of you will leave the tour. Students flying out will be spending one more night at a hotel in Columbus before leaving. (B)

 Students flying in will be leaving Columbus the morning of March 20th.

Tour Cancellation and

Reservation Change Policies:

 

Individual tour members cancelling from the tour for any reason will be charged the following percentages of the tour price. 60-15 days prior (January 9 - February 24 )  25% of tour cost plus applicable supplier penalties, 14 Days prior (February 24 at 5:00pm EDT)  until return - 100% of tour cost per participant. Travel insurance is highly recommended.  No shows are non-refundable. If you have purchased non-refundable airline tickets, each airline's rules apply. To keep any value, YOU must notify each airline at least 24 hours before the flights

 

What is NOT included in the tour price:

Round trip air fare to Columbus to join the Eastern Adventure

Airline luggage fees of any kind (such as basic fee, excess weight fee, etc.)

Meals for any days where it is not listed on the itinerary

Any public transportation fees in cities during free time

Eastern TripBy clicking on the link above, Travel Guard is offering a inexpensive travel insurance and trip cancellation insurance option. For the  Eastern Adventure cost is around $60 (higher if you purchase airfare).  The Western Trip Insurance will be about $88,  and you book it all yourself. our country of residence is the USA or Canada, and your destination is either Ohio or Arizona.   You can pay for this with a credit card, unlike the trip. Travel Insurance is not available if you reside in Washington State or New York State. Prices vary depending on state you are living in.  You can book it yourself using that link above.

 

 

Trip Rooming

If you want to room with specific students please either list him or her on your application (only one person as we mix rooms so you meet new friends) or email Bill McMurray.  There are NO GUARANTEES and rooms may be changed to accommodate other students. We will change roommates to balance buses. Once all rooms are mostly filled late additions will be placed in available rooms no matter what bus students from you district or your friends are on.

If we determine that students have not been reading the emails we reserve the right to cancel you off either or both tours at any time. It is important that you read all the emails we send you.  Students have been sent home from this trip because they don't understand information we have sent in the emails.
